Frequently Asked Questions

What is an eBook?

Simply put, an eBook, or an electronic book is a book-length publication in digital form, consisting of text, images, or both, and produced on, published through, and readable on computers or other electronic devices such as an iPad, Kindle, or Nook.

How fast will I receive my eBook files?

We can generally do an eBook conversion in 2-3 business days. Since we do all of our conversions manually and each book is unique, we can't guarantee a specific conversion time. However, we know many of our clients do have deadlines -- just let us know your schedule ahead of time and we're happy to work something out with you!

What are the advantages of an eBook over a printed book?

While there are numerous advantages that eBooks have over regular books, here are what we consider the top 5:

  1. eBooks are portable. You can carry a whole library of hundreds of books with you, on CD, in a laptop, notebook or any ebook reader, without worrying about their weight.
  2. eBooks can also withstand time better than printed books, which often fall apart with years of use.
  3. eBooks are delivered almost instantaneously. You can purchase, download and start reading them within minutes, without leaving the comfort of your home.
  4. eBooks are very easy to to sell and distribute.
  5. Fonts in eBooks can be resized, making it easier to read for people with disabilities.

What will you convert my file to?

Our standard conversion is to EPUB ("electronic publication") which will work on all major eBook readers except for the Kindle. We can convert to Kindle-compatible MOBI files for an additional $40.

How do I submit my files?

On the Place Order page, there will be a button where you can upload your files for both your inside pages and cover.

How should I send my inDesign files?

We work with inDesign CS5.5. If you have a newer version of inDesign or if you are using a lot of external plugins, we ask that you save your file as an .idml file so that we are able to open it. If your book has graphics, you'll also need to make sure the images are all embedded in your inDesign file. You can either embed all of the links into the file OR send us a "packaged" file that includes all of the links. Here's how to embed the links:

Find the “Links” panel on the right-hand side of your screen and click on it so that the panel expands. (If you don’t see the “Links” panel on the side of your screen, open it by going to the toolbar at the top of the screen and selecting Window>Links.) In the links panel, each of your graphics should be listed by file name. Right click on each graphic so that a drop-down menu appears. Select “Embed link.” Make sure you save your inDesign file after embedding the links.

What format should my covers be in?

Covers can be sent in any image format (such as .jpp, .tiff, .psd, .png, ect.) but PDF files will also work.

What if I also want a printed copy of my book?

While we do not handle printing at eBook Adaptations, we're happy to refer you to an excellent book printer for self publishers. You can visit their website for more information:

How long do I have to review my files?

You have 20 Days to review your files for any mistakes. If the mistake has been made on our end (did not exist in your original file), than we will make the correction free-of-charge. If the mistake has not been made on our end, we charge $75 an hour for fixes.

How do I make my payment?

Once the order form is completed, you will be taken to another screen where you can fill out either your information from your credit card or your Paypal account. We will not begin to work on your files until payment is made in full. For more information about how we do our pricing, visit the Cost Calculator on our homepage or email us with questions or concerns.

Can you make an eBook from a scanned book?

We can make an eBook from scanned material, but it will not read like a traditional eBook. You will not be able to re-size the text or search within the text on the eReader. Basically, the scanned pages will appear as though they are images on a page. We don't recommend that you create eBooks from scanned materials--It's well worth the time and effort to re-type scanned manuscripts for more professional, user-friendly eBooks. If you'd like us to create an eBook from your scanned materials, please email us first and let us know so we can give you an accurate quote.

Will my eBook look exactly like my original book in terms of layout?

While our conversion team takes extra time and care comparing your final eBook files to your original document for guaranteed satisfaction, the layout of your book may not be exactly the same as it was in your original document. We will differentiate headers from body text and make sure that any bold/italicized text remains intact. We will also do our best to match any formatting done to your original document. However, eBooks have certain limitations that other files do not. Fonts will not carry over to standard eBooks. Text flows differently depending on type of eReader used to view the files as well as the size and type of font selected on the reader. Images will not text wrap the same way that they do on a printed page. If you have any concerns about formatting, feel free to email us your document with any specific examples or questions, and we'll gladly let you know whether or not the formatting will be an issue.

We do offer limited specialized formatting (i.e. text wrapping, colorized text, etc.). If you're interested in adding extra elements such as these to your eBook, please email us your file with specific instructions as to what you're looking for and we will provide you with a custom quote.

Will you upload my files to Amazon, Apple, etc.?

Once the conversion is complete, we will send the files back to you to distribute as you wish. We do not send your files directly to any booksellers, but we do make sure they are valid and ready to be uploaded wherever you'd like.

Are there any additional charges or hidden fees?

We try to be as upfront about pricing as possible. The cost calculator provides accurate quotes for books up to 75 chapters with up to 75 images, with basic formatting (italics, bolds, chapter head styling). Books with more than 75 chapters or more than 75 images, or books with specialized formatting (text wrapping, colorized text, endnotes, footnotes, etc.) may incur extra fees. If you have any concerns about pricing, please feel free to email us and send along a copy of your file for a custom quote at any time.

Can I edit my eBook files once the conversion is done?

All proofreading and editing should be finalized BEFORE you send us your files to convert. We cannot stress this enough. We do not recommend editing EPUB files on your own. If necessary, we can make edits for you at a rate of $75/hour. If you send the list of changes, we can give you an estimate.

We use our own EPUB management software, so unfortunately we cannot recommend a program to edit files. We take a great deal of time to make sure the coding is perfect and we also validate the files to make sure they meet EPUB standards. Therefore, we can only guarantee that they will be valid and that they will display properly if you do not edit them yourself. That being said, you are welcome to make changes to the files if you find a program on your own that allows it, but then the files are out of our hands permanently.

How do I sell my eBook? What should I do after I receive my files?

We recommend selling your eBook through as many eBook vendors as possible, including Apple’s iBookstore, Barnes & Noble’s Nook marketplace, and through Amazon. We can provide limited information on how to do this, but it is best to contact those specific vendors to discuss their process and requirements. Here are links to those sites to get you started:
